Claire Cutting -
Contact for Reading First
Pinewoods Elementary is
a Reading First School, which is part of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.
At Pinewoods, we have high academic standards for our students our highly
qualified staff implements a research-based literacy program to ensure the
reading success of all students.
Through explicit and
systematic instruction, during a ninety minute reading block each day, teachers
instruct students in the five components of reading: phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
We recognize that
because all children are unique, they learn differently. Teachers use a
variety of assessments and teaching formats to differentiate instruction to help
each student achieve their goals. We use the MacMillan McGraw/Hill Basal
Program and Spalding phonics for reading.
IR - Intensive Reading strategies are used at grades 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 for students who are substantially below grade level in reading. The
teachers of these classes have received special training to assist students to
make more rapid progress.

Dear Parents:
Summer is approaching and I encourage you to
take advantage of the many activities offered
through the Just Read, Families! website in
honor of May's Reading & Families Month.
Research tells us children who do not read
during the summer may lose a month or more of
the reading progress they had made in school. It
is therefore crucial to keep your children
engaged in summer reading activities.
Children are precious gifts and the
opportunity to inspire the love of reading is
both a great honor and an extraordinary
responsibility. The number one goal of my
administration is for all students in Florida to
be able to read at or above grade level by the
year 2012. With your help, we can make this goal
a reality!
Sincerely,

Jeb Bush
